Overuse Injuries

Two-thirds of tennis injuries are due to overuse.
Ignoring an injury can risk developing chronic problems. If symptoms persist, seek advice!

WHAT? Pain from repeated stresses on the muscles, joints and soft tissues without proper time for healing.

Risk Factors

  • Training errors
  • Too much, too often for too long
  • Incorrect technique - even slight errors!
  • Imbalances in strength & flexibility around joints
  • Poor body alignment
  • Failure to warm up & cool down

Top Tips

  • Watch the 10% rule: to allow for recovery don't increase your training more than 10% per week.
  • Never apply the 'no pain, no gain' approach
  • Reduce the intensity, duration and frequency of play
  • Have your play analysed and correct your technique
  • Always warm up and cool down
  • Avoid old, wet or pressureless tennis balls
  • Check your footwear
  • Improve your fitness, strength, flexibility & core stability
